How to Wrap Your Hands for Boxing (and Why It Matters)

July 3, 2026 · equipment · beginners

Hand wraps look like a ritual and feel like a chore — until you understand what they do. Then they become non-negotiable.

Why wraps exist

Each hand has 27 bones held together by small ligaments that were not designed for impact. Wraps compress the hand into a single solid unit, support the wrist against bending on contact, and protect the knuckles inside the glove. Gloves protect what you hit; wraps protect you.

The basic wrap, step by step

Start with the loop over your thumb, wrap the back of the wrist three times, then three times around the knuckles — keep your fingers spread while you do. Come back down and make an X across the back of the hand, through each finger gap if your wraps are long enough, anchor the thumb, and finish with the wrist again before the velcro. Snug, never tight: if your fingers tingle, start over looser.

The mistakes everyone makes at first

Wrapping with fingers closed (the wrap goes loose the moment you open your hand), skipping the thumb anchor (the whole wrap slides), and wrapping the wrist too few times (wrist support is the wrap's main job). A coach will check your wraps for your first few weeks — ask, that's what we're for.

What to buy

180-inch semi-elastic wraps are the standard and cost about what a smoothie does. Wash them in a mesh bag, air dry, and replace them when they lose stretch. For your first class you don't need any of this — we hand you wraps at the door.
