Your First Boxing Class in Houston: What to Actually Expect
July 3, 2026 · beginners · first class
Walking into a boxing gym for the first time is intimidating — we know, we watch people do it every week. Here's the honest minute-by-minute, so nothing surprises you.
Before class: five minutes of paperwork and gear
Arrive ten minutes early. You'll sign a waiver, meet your coach, and borrow wraps and gloves from us — for your first class, all you need is athletic shoes and a water bottle. A coach will wrap your hands (and teach you to do it yourself; it becomes a ritual you'll weirdly enjoy).
The warm-up: fifteen minutes
Skipping rope, light jogging, shoulder mobility, some core. It's a real warm-up — expect to sweat before you ever make a fist. If you can't skip rope yet, nobody cares; you'll march in place and be skipping within a few weeks.
Technique: the jab, your stance, and footwork
Your first class is mostly about how to stand and how to move. You'll learn the guard position, how to step without crossing your feet, and your first two punches — the jab and the cross. Coaches walk the floor correcting form the whole time. This is the part that separates a boxing gym from a cardio class: someone is actually teaching you.
Rounds: bags and pads
The back half of class runs in rounds — usually three minutes of work, one minute of rest, just like a real bout. You'll hit the heavy bag, and depending on the class you may get a round on the coach's mitts. This is where the hour disappears.
After: you'll be tired in a new way
Boxing works your legs, core, shoulders, and lungs at the same time, plus your brain — remembering combinations while moving is half the workout. Expect to feel it tomorrow in places the gym never touched.
The honest answer about sparring
Nobody spars in their first class, or their first month. Sparring is optional, always supervised, and only happens when you and your coach agree you're ready. Most of our members never spar at all — and get everything they came for.
Your first class with us is free. Book it, show up with shoes, and we'll handle the rest.
